The powder spilled onto an employee’s clothes, according to media reports. The substance has not yet been identified but has been sent abroad for testing, and an investigation is underway, according to an Embassy spokesperson,. It appears that no staff has suffered ill effects and no members of the public have been exposed to the substance.

The Consulate will post to its website updates regarding when visa operations will be resumed.

The USCIS Guangzhou office is also closed through May 17, according to the agency.
