U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou’s New Facility Opens July 23

The U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou has announced that they are moving to their new facility at Zhujiang New Town, with all services to be provided at the new location effective July 23.

Here’s a map. The nearest subway stop is the Zhujiang New Town Metro Station.

This consular post handles all immigrant visa applications for mainland China as well as nonimmigrant visa applications and U.S. citizen services for the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, and Fujian. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) field office in Guangzhou is moving to the new facility too.

Construction began in October 2009. According to a State Department announcement at the time, the cost of the new, seven-building compound was $260 million. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LPP. It has 67 service windows for American citizen services, visa interviews and other applicants. It accommodates approximately 300 employees.

In front of the Consulate has been placed a bright blue, 22-foot-tall abstract sculpture by Joel Shapiro. Some say it looks like a flying man, a bird, or a person standing up from a chair.
