U.S. Consulate in Chengdu Closed Aug. 22 Due to Fire

The Consulate has posted this Emergency Message:

The U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu will be closed Wednesday, August 22, due to a small fire in the Consulate building that occurred on the evening of August 21.  The fire has been extinguished, but for the health and safety of our employees as well as visitors to the Consulate, the Consulate will be closed on August 22 so that Consulate personnel can inspect and clean the facility.  The Consulate plans to re-open for normal business August 23. For individuals with scheduled visa interviews or American Citizen Services appointments, the Consular Section will be in touch to reschedule those interviews in the coming few days.  We will provide any relevant updates to this information on this website.

For emergencies involving U.S. citizens, please contact the American Citizen Services Unit of the U.S. Embassy’s Consular Section through the after-hours emergency telephone 010-8531 4000.

Please continue to monitor the Embassy’s website http://chengdu.usembassy-china.org.cn/ for updated information.  Please consult the Country Specific Information for China, available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs website.   All U.S. citizens in China are urged to enroll online at the Smart Traveler Enrolment Program (STEP).  Registering gives U.S. citizens access to updated information on travel and security within the China and makes it easier for the Embassy to contact citizens in case of emergency.

If the Embassy public phone number, (86-28) 8558 3992, is not operational, U.S. citizens who require emergency assistance may contact the American Citizen Services section at 010-8531 4000 or consularchengdu@state.gov or by calling the United States at the following numbers: 202-501-4444 (if calling from outside the United States or Canada) or 1-888-407-4747 (if calling from within the United States or Canada).
