U.S. Judge Blocks Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Order

A federal judge in Seattle on Thursday issued an order blocking President Trump’s administration from implementing an executive order curtailing the right to birthright citizenship in the United States, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, sitting in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, granted the plaintiffs’ motion in State of Washington v. Trump to issue a temporary restraining order preventing the administration from enforcing the executive order.

“There is a strong likelihood that Plaintiffs will succeed on the merits of their claims that the Executive Order violates the Fourteenth Amendment and Immigration and Nationality Act,” the Judge found.

“I have difficulty understanding how a member of the bar could state unequivocally that is a constitutional order,” the judge told the Trump administration’s attorney. “It boggles my mind.”

The lawsuit was brought by the states of Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and Illinois.

The temporary restraining order (TRO) is scheduled to last for two weeks as the court considers entering a longer-term injunction.
