319(b) Expeditious Naturalization: USCIS Washington DC Field Office Procedures Update

The USCIS Washington DC Field Office has provided an update regarding their procedures for appointments and oath ceremonies for applicants for expeditious naturalization under section 319(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Section 319(b) allows the spouses of U.S. citizens employed abroad by certain U.S. employers to qualify for naturalization without completing the normally required 3 or 5 years of continuous residence in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident. For more about this, see Expeditious Naturalization under Section 319(b) for Spouses of U.S. Citizens Employed Abroad.

Here’s the Washington DC Field Office update:

Subject: Monday 319b Interviews Resuming

Good morning agency liaisons and attorneys,

The USCIS Washington DC Field Office will be resuming Monday 319b interviews due to the increasing amount of filings under this section of law requesting our office to conduct their interview. Although we will be resuming Monday interviews the ceremony will continue to be on Tuesday afternoon. If approved on Monday the applicant will be given a ceremony notice to attend the Tuesday 2:30 pm ceremony. We will not be granting request to have a Tuesday interview for operational reasons as most interviews will be scheduled for Monday moving forward. Please have the applicants plan accordingly if traveling.

Also, the USC spouse may not attend the interview as we need only interview the applicant nor may the USC spouse enter the building due to COVID-19 mitigation strategies USCIS is currently enforcing. The ceremony itself may also only be attended by the applicant until further notice.

One of the advantages of expeditious naturalization under section 319(b) is that an applicant can choose the USCIS office where their interview will be held.
